Conceptual design of Russia-Belarus satellite to be ready by June

Tuesday, 21 January 2020

A conceptual design of a new Belarus-Russia Earth remote sensing satellite will be ready by June 2020, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov said in an interview to BelTA.

As for the acting Belarusian satellite, its lifetime in orbit has been extended to the end of 2021. “This means almost twice the estimated lifetime of its application and is equivalent to placing a second satellite into orbit. The satellite is of high importance for many industries. In 2019, more than 2,000 packages of high-resolution remote sensing data were produced.

They together cover an area of more than 2 million square kilometers and are worth some $4 million,” said Vladimir Gusakov. For example, in 2019, the technology of artificial neural networks was used to develop an experimental sample of a micro-module for rapid recognition, selection and compression of video information. It is intended for use as a payload for light unmanned aerial vehicles and small satellites. Its hardware is based on microcomputers with the weight ranging from 10g to 200g.

“We are implementing space projects not only with Russia. Multi-layer electromagnetic screens, manufactured by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, provide electromagnetic compatibility of devices within the scientific complex of the Japanese satellite sent into orbit for Mercury research,” Vladimir Gusakov added.
